SNOW AND CHALET REPORTS
Chamonix (report by Julene)
The 2005/6 PS0 Chamonix season has got
off to an incredible start - in both senses of the word.
After a horribly slow beginning to last
year's winter snow our hopes weren't high this time
around, but on arrival our first drinks in the Rusty
(http://www.therusty.net/) found us looking out of the
window onto a scene more reminiscent of the best February
has to offer. Even the gloomy words of a wise old mountain
guide (along the lines of 'it always used to snow like
this in November') could not dampen our spirits. Ten
days later and the snow has only really just stopped.
Things are shaping up very well indeed.
As for the other kind of incredible, I
(PS0 host, Julene), in spite of nearly 8 years of snowboarding,
committed the terminal rookie error of first day over
enthusiasm. I really should have known better. For my
sins, I got one fractured vertebra and 72 hours in hospital
improving my French and finding new and interesting
ways to perform bodily functions without putting even
one foot out of bed. Now I have a bizarre and very expensive
plastic corset (in about 3 months search for it on eBay
under 'p' for 'paraphilia paraphernalia') and I am not
allowed to sit down until March. A broken back on the
very first day of riding has to be some kind of record,
right? Answers on a postcard please.
Still, things began to look up considerably with the
arrival of the first three housemates - James, Jack
and Lisa. Ever since, they have been keeping us entertained,
not least with their strange tribal rituals involving
a deck of cards, tequila and a miniature sombrero. Today
saw everyone hit the lifts at a very leisurely 3.30pm,
we cracked open the inaugural can of Bien Vu cassoulet
(almost had to resort to the dictionary to work out
what kind of meat was in it) and we have our Christmas
tree. The perfect start I should say.
