SNOW AND CHALET REPORT

Chamonix Argentière - report by Martin

December was epic. According to the locals it was the best pre-season snow for 25 years. Highlight was the 5 foot dump in 3 days that turned every ski area into a powder paradise with no tourists and fresh lines available everywhere. The early-season arrivals to the chalet made full use of this incredible start to winter and proximity to the mountain by getting first lifts up and slashing boards and skis at the pillows of soft snow before coming home to bask in the glowing love of apres-ski.

As the season got into gear housemates started appearing from the four corners bring mountains of skis, snowboards, sledges and more. Of an evening, cheesy 80's films could be regularly seen appearing on the silver screen in the living area (the house Mastermind speciality subject would be the Lethal Weapon series). A small but competitive backgammon syndicate was formed and there was a certain Rain Man-like zeal about checking weather forecasts. The evenings in were complimented by evenings out in Chamonix and Argentiere with sponsorship from Jagermeister and Heineken prompting a less than expedient start to the following day's skiing.

All in all it's been incredible. We're now getting alternate blocks of days of snow and blue skies. It's the most perfect weather you could possibly hope for and has already outclassed last season's heavenly offerings. To be woken up by the rays of the sun beaming through the wooden shutters, wandering out onto the balcony to discover a foot of fresh snow and a gleaming mountain only yards away is so incredibly special and makes you start and finish the day smiling from ear to ear.
